Slaveholding: Presidents

While there is no evidence that Athens Female Academy owned enslaved people, census records show that many of its presidents, board of trustee members, faculty members and staff members participated in chattel slavery.

In addition to profiting directly from slave labor, some early Methodist presidents worked to spread proslavery ideology before and during the Civil War, as well as white supremacist messaging after the war.

This section provides information on presidents who were also slaveholders during their lifetime.
